Public feedback for AI (& beyond)

Public feedback for AI (& beyond)

The real-world impacts of AI systems are increasingly concrete: consumer AI products are reaching billions of users, while institutional actors are beginning to take significant and consequential actions based on perceived or predicted future AI development.

Yet the public has very few channels for expressing their views about their experiences with AI — despite gestures towards ‘democratic’ approaches to (the governance of) AI over the past several years. At the same time, the information ecosystem around AI and its impacts is more fragmented — and less trustworthy — than ever; closed AI companies cannot be trusted as good-faith sources of truth, yet retain exclusive access to crucial data about actual usage.

Members of the public hold valuable information about (the impacts of) AI, and we should learn from them. Specifically, crowdsourced feedback has the potential to help identify systematic, societal-level issues, including unknown unknowns that emerge only gradually; moreover, this type of information is a public good that should not remain behind the gates of disproportionately powerful companies.
